Bifidobacterium infantis

Bifidobacterium infantis is a type of lactic acid bacteria found in the same group as Lactobacillus. It’s naturally found in the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract and it helps maintain a healthy digestive tract.

Bifidobacterium infantis is a friendly strain of bacteria with unique abilities to reduce intestinal inflammation.

Bifidobacterium has been demonstrated to predominate in the gut microbiota of breastfed infants and to benefit the host by accelerating maturation of the immune response.

Bifidobacterium longum subspecies infantis (B. infantis) is well adapted to the infant gut and has co-evolved with the mother-infant dyad and gut microbiome, in part due to its ability to consume complex carbohydrates found in human milk. B. infantis and its human host have a symbiotic relationship that protects the preterm or term neonate and nourishes a healthy gut microbiota prior to weaning.

Food sources rich in Bifidobacterium infantis

Bifidobacterium infantis is also found in some food products. It’s used in the production of some yogurt, olives, sauerkraut, salami, and cheese. It’s also added to infant formula.

Bifidobacterium infantis can also be found in supplements with friendly strains of bacteria.
