Bifidobacterium bifidum

Bifidobacterium bifidum is one of the most common friendly strain of bacteria that can be found in the intestines and stomach of mammals, including humans. They help the body perform essential functions such as digestion and staving off harmful bacteria.

When B. bifidum is low or absent all together in the human intestine, it is an indication of being in an unhealthy state.

The use of B. bifidum helps reduce the chances of acute diarrhea and the risk of E. coli infections and contributes to the maintenance of vaginal homeostasis. Also, B. bifidum is used for activating the immune response and for preventing gastro-intestinal infections.

Bifidobacterium bifidum decreases as people age. As B. bifidum decreases, other gut bacteria such as Lactobacilli, Enterococci, Enterobacteria and Clostridia increase. All of these decrease an older adult's liver ability to function adequately and efficiently.

Food sources rich in Bifidobacterium bifidum

Like other friendly strains of bacteria, Bifidobacterium bifidum can be found in certain foods, including: yogurt with added cultures, kefir, fermented foods, pickles, cured meats and certain wines.

Bifidobacterium bifidum can also be found as a food supplement.
