Lactobacillus salivarius

Lactobacillus salivarius is a friendly strain of bacteria species that has been found to live in the gastrointestinal tract. It has been frequently isolated from human, porcine and avian gastrointestinal tracts and also human milk and has gained attention due to its therapeutic properties to modulate gut microbiota, produce antimicrobial substances, stimulate protective immune response, inhibit faecal enzymatic activity and suppress the pathogenic bacteria.

The species L. salivarius owes its name to the 'salivary' properties of the oral cavity from which it was first isolated.

Food sources rich in Lactobacillus salivarius

Lactobacillus salivarius is generally taken in supplement form, but is also found in foods such as yogurt, tomatoes, bananas, chicory root, artichokes, garlic and asparagus.
