Proanthocyanidins

The proanthocyanidins, also referred to as procyanidins, are one of the most beneficial groups of plant flavonoids, found in a variety of plants such as blueberries. Flavonoids are considered as health promoting and disease preventing dietary supplements. They possess antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory effects.

Often associated with consumer products made from cranberries, grape seeds or red wine, proanthocyanidins help prevent and treat urinary tract infections in women.

Food sources rich in Proanthocyanidins

The proanthocyanidins can be found in many natural sources, such as apples, cinnamon, cocoa beans, grape seed, grape skin and red wines of Vitis vinifera (the European wine grape).

However, bilberry, cranberry, black currant, green tea, black tea, and other plants also contain these flavonoids. Cocoa beans contain the highest concentrations.

Apples contain on average per serving about eight times the amount of proanthocyanidin found in wine.
