Bifidobacterium longum

Bifidobacterium longum colonizes the human gastrointestinal tract. It is considered to be one of the earliest colonizers of the gastrointestinal tract of infants, where it, along with other Bifidobacterium species, represents up to 90% of the bacteria of an infant's gastrointestinal tract. This number gradually drops with age.

Bifidobacterium longum is one of the well-established probiotic strains with numerous health benefits in humans. It is considered part of the gut microbiota and its production of lactic acid helps prevent growth of pathogenic organisms.

Bifidobacterium longum contributes to production of the B-group vitamins and other enzymes that aid in digestion and prevention against diarrhoea caused by antibiotics or food pathogens.

At the same time, it also effectively helps the human body in resisting the intrusion of infectious agents, getting rid of harmful bacteria, regulating the immune system and strengthening our physical resistance against diseases affecting the gut.

Food sources rich in Bifidobacterium longum

Bifidobacterium longum can be found in many foods including goat dairy products like yogurt and kefir, seaweed or fermented milk.

It is also incorporated in various products such as milk-based drinks, infant formulas and nutritional supplements as functional food ingredients.
